Primaries

What are primary elections?

Primary elections are a system by which the members of political parties choose in a direct way the candidates that will represent them during all sort of suffrages.

This method will be carried out before local elections, when the members of the party at each one of the circumscriptions will choose who, among the different candidates, is the most suitable for the leadership of the lists that will represent the party in those local elections.

The same will happen in a context of autonomic elections in which all the members at a regional level will choose their candidates to the Autonomic Parliament, and in the general elections, in which the totality of the members of the party will choose in a direct and free way their candidate to chair the Government.

The same process will be carried out for the election of local, provincial, regional and national presidents of the party.

Why primary elections?

- A democracy has a real handicap to guarantee a genuine political representation if it relies on parties that, in fact, do not apply democratic principles in their internal structure, so they are completely unable to express and article the different ideas shared in the political space represented by the party.

-It is a fact that the growing gap between political parties and their own rank and file members, feeds peoples’ mistrust towards political representatives.

-Primary elections give the fundamental democratic legitimacy to the designation process of the candidates, which will represent the party in an election.

-The same way, primary elections help to solve conflictive situations inside any political group, because pre-candidates have to recognize the bonding nature of the election and comply to the result loyally.

How can we succeed?

We are carrying out a deep study on how the primary elections are held in other parties and other countries of our environment, and we are also trying to adapt our proposal to the peculiarities of the Spanish political system.

Our main goal is to propose an amendment to the Statutes of the People’s Party and show and defend it in the appropriate site: the XVI National Congress that will take place in Valencia next 20th to 22nd of June 2008.

About us

We are the 11 designed convention delegates of the Salamanca District, in Madrid; we are 10 of the People’s Party and 1 of New Generations.

We were elected by the members in our district on 21st April 2008 and we propose to deepen in the development of internal democracy in our party, choosing our candidates through primary elections, in which it is carried out the premise “one member, one vote”.

Join us

We are open to every single suggestion that could help us in the development of this proposal.

We also want to receive as much formal support as possible to succeed in our goal: we want our proposal to win the suffrages in the Congress of Valencia.

So, if you are a friend, a voter, a member, or even if you take part in the Congress as a convention delegate of the People’s Party, we need to know your thoughts.
